As Head of Singapore International School and as a long-time proponent of Model United Nations activities for students. I am delighted to invite you to the annual SISMUN conference which will be held on our campus from 20-22 January 2012. Over a span of four short years, SIS has developed a dedicated and enthusiastic cadre of MUN-seasoned students who are eager to enlist your talent and energies for the second edition of our school’s Model United Nations conference.
As this year’s conference focuses on issues which reflect the grave problems of the world today, I want to challenge you to keep your vision trained on the future. While the problems to be debated are current ones, they can be solved only if you are able to envision a different world. You must develop a multi pronged approach of fundamental issues like the nature and causes of poverty. You need to understand cultural diversity and explore the complex realities of diverse societies – in my opinion, the best form of pluralism. Please examine with a critical eye the concept of development, looking at models of sustainable development and their impact at the grassroots level, as compared with the dominant model of consumerism. Finally, I hope that you will look at South Asia’s potential as an increasingly important strategic area in the geopolitics of the future.
It will be your future. Over the three days of our SISMUN conference, you will have a chance to hammer out new understandings and agreements among the nations of the world. The problems you will consider and debate, from illegal arms sales, piracy and terrorism to the abysmal conditions many women face in their domestic and working lives, are the problems of today. The solutions you find may shape the world of tomorrow.
When you speak in committee or in the General Assembly, you could be the mirror of the disenfranchised. When you create a photojournalistic essay for our annual SISMUN exposition, your camera can transmit images which the world might otherwise fail to locate. MUNners have every opportunity to learn about the real and difficult issues of our world and to develop ideas that will change dire present realities into future opportunities. It is all up to you, so I hope that you will join us for three days of stimulating discussion, exciting debate and thought-provoking insights from our expert guest panelists. Please do join our students for SISMUN 2012,
Warm regards,
Mrs SharoneeMullick
