Creativity, Activity, Service or CAS is on of the three essential elements that every student must
complete as part of the Diploma Programme. It enables students to show initiative,
demonstrate perseverance, develop skills such as collaboration, problem solving and decision making.
It enhances their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning.
As part of the CAS activities, students are exposed to unfamiliar situations and tasks in
a real-world context. To complete these, students need to reflect on their prior knowledge,
learn new concepts and develop new skills. When students are engaged in real experience they
see the relevance of it, make connections to formal learning, have increased motivation to
learnnew skills, become aware of their responsibilities as community members,
are willing to accept new challenges and ultimately become self-directed, life-long learners.
In Singapore International School, we have a well-developed CAS programme and challenge
our students to understand and think critically about local, national and world issues,
to make connections, to develop skills and values that would make them active global
citizens who would work towards making the world a more fair and sustainable place.
CAS activities are scheduled during school hours and supervised by faculty members art and craft,
painting, photography, pottery, dramatics, film club, dance, and different forms of instrumental
music are offered as part of ‘creativity’ activities. As part of ‘activity’, students participate
in a range of games like football, cricket, basketball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, swimming,
hockey etc. As part of social experience, our students initiated various activities: fund raising
for charity, paper recycling, awareness campaigns, staff empowerment programmes, collection drives
to offer help, organising ‘medical camps’ for underprivileged children, working with various NGOs
like CCDT, Magic Bus, Salam Bombay, Navjyoti Foundation, Goonj, Spark a Change, Mouth and foot Painters
Association etc.
Involvement in these activities enriches the IB experience and teaches them to think globally and act locally.
